MY CLASSROOM
I always endeavor to create an active, participatory and inclusive learning environment for my students. Through collaborative exercises my students learn how to give and receive critiques in a supportive and respectful manner, and to build shared knowledge through collaboration.
Siren Orchestra
For this senior thesis course I conducted a workshop for the students to learn basic electronics soldering and circuit-bending. They applied the skills they learned to various senior thesis projects. This is an example of how I use collaboration to acquire new skills and develop a more critical eye, even when the end results are individual projects.
SOLA/HACK – DESIGN FOR SOCIAL GOOD HACKATHON
Every spring for the past few years I have run a design for social good hackathon in South Los Angeles. Working with community leaders, the hackathon teaches both human centered design principles as well as the issues facing economically disadvantaged communities. By bringing people together from different communities and backgrounds to work together and learn from one another, participants learn how design thinking can be a tool for empowerment and inclusion.
SOLA/HACK is affiliated with the TEDx Crenshaw event.
